comeback vinyl

an immersive digital storefront translating physical record bins into intuitive UI.

.problem

The early 2020s saw a resurgence in the popularity of vinyl records, and with it, many new and everyday users of the format. The traditional record store experience is based on "crate digging," which is disorganized and hyper-local in its approach and is great for the hardcore audiophile but can be intimidating for the newcomer. Additionally, the geography of the record store can prevent many users from accessing a well-curated experience in their area of the world.

.solution

Comeback Vinyl is a digital neighborhood record store, and it eliminates the friction of crate digging through its revamped and highly organized eCommerce platform. It has moved its massive and complex inventory into an incredibly intuitive and visually appealing interface, allowing the expertise of the local record store to reach anyone through its streamlined navigation and eCommerce experience.

Translating the analog joy of flipping through records into a digital interface required balancing high-density information with a clean, "indie" aesthetic. We had to navigate the complexities of managing a massive, ever-changing inventory of both new and used items, ensuring that the grading and condition of every record were communicated with absolute clarity to maintain collector trust.

.constraints

Omni-Channel Inventory Sync: Connect isolated POS and eCommerce platforms to avoid sync issues and overselling of products.

Visual Density vs Speed: Optimized high-resolution mockups and rich metadata to ensure collectors could inspect album details without compromising mobile performance.

Metadata Standard: Robust data structure to map thousands of SKUs, pressings, weight, and release years.

Streamlined Checkout: Simple checkout with multi-payment options.

.pain points

Discovery Gap: The majority of users found it difficult to discover out-of-print and limited edition items because the standard search mechanisms were not suitable for the metadata.

Information Deficit: The customers required information about the product, such as the quality of pressing, sound quality, and package content, along with images and audio samples to make an informed decision.

Checkout Abandonment: The customers found it difficult to complete the purchase due to the multi-step process and the requirement to create an account, which led to the abandonment of the purchase by 42% of the customers.

Shipping Anxiety: Many participants were also concerned about the condition and shipping damage of the records, which negatively impacted the online purchase, especially due to the shipping costs and delivery times.

.discover

translating the analog joy of crate digging.

From the beginning, we've told our users that they could have the experience of a high-fidelity mirror of the physical Alpharetta store through our digital platform. The hope was that the transition from crate digging in the store to ordering records online would felt like a singular, cohesive narrative. To achieve this, our research phase focused on identifying exactly where the traditional, hyper-local "crate digging" experience breaks down for newcomers and geographically isolated collectors.

core goals.

  1. Analyze the Discovery Gap

  2. Evaluate Information Deficits

  3. Assess Checkout Friction

  4. Understand Shipping Anxiety

our audience

38 Survey Participants + 12 User Interviews: We engaged a mix of hardcore audiophiles and newcomers to the vinyl resurgence to understand their browsing habits, their metadata needs, and their tolerance for digital friction.

consolidating data into actionable insights.

Translating the analog experience of browsing through records and applying this to the digital interface is all about finding the right amount of information and giving the interface an indie aesthetic. We condensed the results from our 50 participants to determine the trends and barriers in establishing trust at the national level.

primary findings.

Checkout Bottleneck: 21 participants (42%) dropped off during the checkout process because it was a multi-step process and required an account.

Discovery Gap: Most participants were unable to find niche/experimental music through the standard search function and need more intuitive ways to filter based on good metadata, not text.

Auditory Blindspot: Customers want more information and details such as the pressing type and contents, as well as audio samples before they buy.

Fragile Shipping Fear: Many participants were concerned about the shipping and the condition in which the record would arrive.

.define

architecting the digital neighborhood store.

In order to replicate the experience of flipping through bins, we designed a Shopify solution from scratch, extending beyond templated solutions. The goal was a high-fidelity, handcrafted visual experience using Shopify’s section-based content management system while still providing a drag-and-drop solution for the client.

bringing the data to life.

Our research strategy centered around a singular user persona in order to keep all decisions aligned with the core mission: bring the hyper-local record store experience to a national audience.

mapping the digital crate digging journey.

We took the analog experience and replicated it digitally from discovery through checkout in order to shorten the journey for users while still allowing for exploration beyond their usual favorites.

Laying out these digital touchpoints revealed exactly where the architecture needed to intervene:

Discovery: We replaced weak search functionality with rich metadata in order for users to filter by pressing, weight, and release year so that niche indie pressings feel accessible nationwide.

Validation: We bridged browsing with listening by using Spotify’s playback API in order for users to preview music before purchasing.

Checkout: We simplified from a multi-step, account-gated solution to a seamless, multi-payment solution in order to address shipping and grading in a way that prevents the 42% checkout abandonment rate.

defining the mvp.

We used our persona and journey map in order to determine key features for launch while still achieving a boutique feel for the client.

.develop

engineering the digital storefront.

Our information architecture process began with mapping the digital journey, followed by structural development. Utilizing Shopify as a backend system capable of handling vast amounts of metadata was crucial to ensure snappy mobile performance.

mapping the metadata.

To improve discovery, we overhauled the standard eCommerce approach to categories. A data-rich hierarchy was engineered for thousands of SKUs, as well as a bespoke taxonomy to instantly distinguish new vs. used, pressing years, weights of vinyl, and grades of condition.

designing the discovery + validation flow.

We worked to define the exact steps a user takes from discovery to auditory validation, striving to make this process as intuitive as placing a needle on a record.

Filter Logic: A bespoke flow was engineered to bypass text searching, allowing users to drill down by genre, pressing, and condition in three taps or fewer.

Spotify API Flow: A bespoke flow was engineered to integrate with Spotify, ensuring audio playback begins instantly on the product page without any hindrance of metadata.

re-engineering the checkout flow.

Research revealed a staggering 42% of users are abandoning the checkout process due to forced account creation. A new, streamlined single-page checkout was engineered, focusing on guest checkout as well as offering alternative payment methods such as Shop Pay and Apple Pay at the cart level.

iterating the omni-channel sync logic.

Overselling a just purchased in-store item was a critical concern, so a real-time, bi-directional integration was engineered between the physical POS system and Shopify, allowing true omni-channel sync logic to occur.

.deliver

a hi-fi digital mirror.

With the backend and omni-channel sync in place, we began working on the high-fidelity visual design, crafting a Shopify solution from scratch to simulate browsing through bins. We wanted to create a bespoke, premium experience while still utilizing Shopify’s section-based CMS to enable a drag-and-drop functionality.

the core experience.

We brought our user flows to life as production-ready screens, streamlining the catalog into fast, instinctive decisions to reduce time-to-cart and encourage discovery beyond familiar artists.

Data-Driven Product Layouts:

Showcasing audio-relevant information and specific metadata typically not found on record sleeves, ensuring customers purchase the exact variant they want.

Built-In Listening Station:

Including Spotify playback as part of the product experience allows collectors to verify track information before purchase, increasing conviction and engagement.

Intuitive Catalog Filtering:

By limiting the catalog to logical options, we reduced time-to-cart and increased exploration beyond users' normal rotations. This exploration model made niche indie pressings feel available nationwide while maintaining a boutique feel within the eCommerce site.

final outcome

The final custom eCommerce platform took a traditional analog experience and turned it into a high-fidelity digital storefront by transforming massive catalog data into a highly intuitive discovery flow, which results in eliminating buyer uncertainty, maintaining the indie brand aesthetic, and scaling local trust to a national audience.

.impact

The launch of the integrated Comeback Vinyl eCommerce platform transformed the Alpharetta boutique into a scalable destination for music collectors across the country. By solving the problem of inventory fragmentation and music-listening uncertainty, we developed a high-fidelity digital experience that replicates the trust and discovery of an in-store visit.

National Expansion: From local to national, we successfully fulfilled orders across all 50 states within six months.

Conversion Optimization: Spotify previews and pressing information increased time-on-site by 28% and first-time purchases.

Friction Reduction: Streamlined multi-step checkout and shipping information reduced cart abandonment rates on hot releases by 35%.

Operational Precision: Unified Shopify syncing reduced inventory-related oversell errors by 95% compared to the legacy system.

Digital Discovery: Over half of our users employed our custom filters, which increased conversions on niche and experimental music outside the mainstream genres.
